Moosletter — Week of May 12th

Graduate Goodbye- Alex Beckerman

With the end of the school year, it is time to say goodbye to all of our graduating crusty cows 🙁 We will miss you all very much!

1. What are you getting your graduate degree in and what are your post graduation plans?

I am getting my Masters in Design + Innovation (1 year Interdisciplinary design program w/ partner schools of Engineering, Human Ecology, Information, Art, and Business). I also got my undergrad degree here in Computer Science, Psychology, and a minor in Game Design.
I graduate in August, so I am currently on the job hunt right now. I am looking at jobs in User Experience design and research, and possibly game design.

2. What initially drew you to join the Wisconsin Track Club, and how did you get involved?

I knew that I wanted to run in college to some capacity, but I also had some alumni from my highschool who did track club their freshman/sophomore year and loved it. I was very much enticed by the fact that the club lets you do d3 running with the freedom to set your own schedule.
I got involved by going to meets, practices, and socials regularly. I also served an appointed position, webmaster, which I really enjoyed because I got to work with the board and understand more about what goes on behind the scenes of the club. It also gave me the confidence to eventually run for travel coordinator (which I swept so cleanly that I didn’t even have an opponent). Being on the board really get me involved in club operations and helped me get to know other cows.

3. What was your most memorable moment with the Wisconsin Track Club, and why did it stand out to you?

My most memorable track club moment was the first WTC camping trip. I had never been to Devil’s Lake before, and it was really great to explore nature and hang out by the beach with the cows. I absolutely love smores and bonfires too. I think it really helped me get to know some of the cows, as I think the camping trip sometimes brings out people who weren’t involved before.
Honorable mention: that one bay loop run in fall 2022 where we talked about the implications of the pope in Cars 2 on the cars universe as a whole.

4. What will you miss about the club when you graduate?

I will miss the community of the club. Track club has been such a great way to meet people and I’ve really felt like I’ve gotten the same level of community that I got from my cross country team in high school. I will miss all of the friends I have made along the way, which was the real treasure.
I might also miss being called the Wizard, although I currently have plans to incorporate it into my personal website, so maybe it’ll stick.

5. What advice would you give current or future WTC members?

Go back in time so that you can get the 10 years of experience that employers are looking for.
But actually: my piece of advice: don’t be afraid to get involved. The club has a lot of great opportunities in volunteering, running, and socializing, and some of them are the most fun I have ever had. I think this also applies to a lot of things in life, like applying to jobs or starting a cult making friends.

6. Do you have any last words you would like to say to the Wisconsin Track Club before you leave?

Sign up to be an authorized driver! You don’t even have to drive! It just makes travel for the club way easier!

Eagle Open!

The cows had a great time competing in the Eagle Open last week Friday and we had many amazing performances!! With this, our track season is officially over!! Congratulations to all of the cows that competed at all of the meets and the Cows that broke many records this season!!

Summer Track Series

As the school year is wrapping up, our preparations for the Summer Track Series – Wisconsin Track Club’s most important volunteering and fundraising event of the year – are in full swing.

What is the Summer Track Series?

STS is a series of community track and field meets organized by WTC that occur on various Thursday nights throughout June and July, culminating in the Dane County Championships at the end of July. These meets are put on at various tracks around the Madison area and are open to all ages and abilities. When we say “all,” we mean all – it doesn’t matter if an athlete is 5 years old or 75 years old, there’s a spot for them at STS! The Summer Track Series attracts hundreds of athletes every summer and fosters interest in track and field throughout the greater Madison community, making it a wonderful way to give back to this sport that we all love.

How does STS help the Wisconsin Track Club?

In addition to being a fantastic community event, STS serves as the main fundraiser for WTC. Profits from the meets go directly to lowering costs throughout the year for our members: reduced meet fees, free team dinners, fun socials, and more! For instance, we were able to cut the meet fee for NIRCA Nationals earlier this month roughly in half using funds generated from STS. A successful Summer Track Series means that we can continue to keep our club events affordable and accessible to all, so that’s why we need your help!

So how can I help?

Volunteer! STS wouldn’t be possible without the volunteers who ensure that our meets run smoothly. We truly appreciate each and every one of you! Volunteer positions include managing field events, working at the registration table, moving hurdles, and more. Stay on the lookout for a volunteer sign-up once we get closer to the meet dates.

All of the info for volunteering and to sign up for upcoming events is all found on the volunteering calendar. If you have any question or concerns contact our volunteer coordinator, Jenna Auth!

Field Day!

The cows had a very fun study break this past Saturday at field day!! Congratulations to Alex's team for winning it all! (What a comeback for Edwards from his last place finish last year!)

Claire's team took second, Emma's team took third, and finally Jaecan's team took LAST! We played many fun field games and had some friendly competition between the Cows!

Senior Spotlight- Matt Stilling

With the end of the school year, and graduation coming up soon, it is time to say goodbye to our beloved seniors 🙁 We will miss you all very much!

1. What are you getting your degree in and what are your post graduation plans?

I am majoring in computer and data science, and I will be working as a software engineer at Garmin after graduating.

2. What initially drew you to join the Wisconsin Track Club, and how did you get involved?

I went to high school with Ryan Unruh, our former treasurer, who told me about the club and encouraged me to join. Starting college in 2020 during the pandemic made for a challenging social life, but going to practice offered a great opportunity to meet others. In the midst of a locked-down campus, practice was a normalcy and often the bright spot in my day. I think that many of the other freshmen felt this same way, which helped us form a bond and become the best of friends to this day. Inspired to provide this same welcoming and rewarding atmosphere for future members, I decided to run for various board positions during my time here.

3. What was your most memorable moment with the Wisconsin Track Club, and why did it stand out to you?

There's so many! Any of the socials or meets would be fit to mention here, but one in particular that stands out was the first WTC camping trip in August of 2021. It was so great to be able to see everyone again after the summer off, and this was the first big "normal" event that we did as a club after the pandemic. From the classic Devil's Doorway hike to meeting Gary at Double K-D, we made so many good memories that weekend. I highly recommend going to the next camping trip at the end of this summer!

4. What will you miss about the club when you graduate?

Definitely all my fellow members! I have been lucky to meet so many awesome people through WTC, and it has been hard saying goodbye to everyone. Going on runs won't be quite the same without the Cows!

5. What advice would you give current or future WTC members?

Don't be afraid to take a step outside your comfort zone! Whether that is running for a board position, saying hi to someone new at practice, or anything in-between, WTC offers so many great opportunities that you might miss if you don't put yourself out there a bit. I would have never pictured myself as the president of such a great club coming into college, but I had that amazing opportunity because I made myself branch out. The same thing applies to your college experience more generally and life onward. I promise you won't regret it!

6. Do you have any last words you would like to say to the Wisconsin Track Club before you graduate?

It feels like just yesterday that I went to my first practice and our former president Brian enthusiastically welcomed me. Your time in college goes by faster than you could ever imagine, and you won't appreciate some things until they are gone; make sure to enjoy it! WTC will always have a special place in my heart – Cows Achieve!

Eagle Open

The eagle open is this Friday the 10th and is the last meet of the season! Good luck to all competing  on Friday and congratulations to all of the Cows that competed this outdoor season!!

Finals week

Want a break in your busy finals week? We'll be having unofficial practices held at the same place and time as usual! However, VP's will not be at these practices/leading them due to official practices ending and it being finals week.

Moosletter — Week of April 28th

drake Alternative and Crazylegs!

The Cows had a very busy weekend between two races!! First, we had the Drake Alternative on Thursday the 25th! There were two club records broken, the first one being the women's 4x1 broken by Kate Bjorklund, Haili Brone, Sabina Dayal, and Mirielle Sherman, and the second one being the women's 400m Hurdles broken by Lily Hamacher! On top of this, Matt Stilling went sub 4:00 in the 1500m! Second, we had Crazylegs this Saturday and we had many Cows come out to compete with the community! Though it was a very hot and windy day, Matt Stilling finished 9th overall and Adam Kitay placed 15th overall! 7 other cows also finished within the top 50 as well! Cows Achieve!

FIELD DAY!

In the thunderous coliseum of destiny (Ed Klief park), where the tempest of competition howls with merciless zeal, only the elite dare to stake their claim. Here, beneath the unforgiving spotlight of fate, Cows clash and champions rise from the ashes of the ordinary. With hearts forged in the fires of relentless ambition and eyes set on the glittering prize of eternity, these daunting contenders transcend mere mortals. For in this grand spectacle of triumph and glory, where legends are born and myths are made, remember this undying truth: only the best can conquer, only the best can reign supreme, and only the best can etch their names in the annals of victory! Mark your calendars for the ultimate Field Day Social this Saturday (The 4th)! Get ready to gear up for a Field Day where only the best Cows can claim the title of Field Day Champion! BADGER CLASSIC AND MESSAGE FROM JENNA:

Hey, cows!

Coming to you live from College Library is your newest volunteering opportunity and a good way to help WTC raise some funds. This Friday the Badger Classic track meet is happening at McClimon and we were asked to help run events. If you're not too busy with finals or want a little study break please come by to help out!! Anytime that you can spare is greatly appreciated! Don't leave the VPs and me hanging 🙂

The sign up spreadsheet for volunteering at the Badger Classic can be found here. Bring your cow friends for a fun time! Rumor has it we may even get to watch some of our fellow members compete D1! You won't want to miss out.

Sign up for the event (or events if you can stick around) that you would like to help with on the spreadsheet by entering your name. Please keep field events to two people per event max so that we can have people spread out evenly among events. For running event set up, anyone can jump in as needed. Throwing events will be hosted at the Goodman Softball Complex, NOT McClimon. It is nearby and you enter it into your phone for directions if needed. For any events that you are helping with, you will need to show up 45 minutes before the start time of that event.

Please shoot me a text, or email, or stop me at practice if you have any questions. I know that this is a really inconvenient time of the semester but if you can spare the time please help out! This is also a good chance to try to get those volunteering hours in and get an incentive if you want one.

Happy studying,

Jenna Auth

Spring Break

Welcome back! We hope you had a great and relaxing break! We have a busy month ahead of us! Nationals, Viking Olympics, Beloit Relays, Formal, and Crazylegs!!

Unfortunately, the Wisconsin Track Club will have to cease the cow as our mascot due to the affiliation with UW-Madison and will have to become the Wisconsin Track Club Badgers... (April Fools) (We will forever be the WTC Cows)

MARCH MADNESS

And just like that, the final four is here! UCONN, Alabama, NC State, and Purdue are all fighting for the championship game! Jack Hatlestad and Sabina are tied for first right now, however there is still basketball left so the first place spot is not locked in yet!

OUTDOOR SEASON

With indoor season wrapping up- and WAY too much time spent on a 200m track- it is finally time for outdoor season!! Our first two meets are coming up after spring break so make sure you sign up for them here!!

Viking Olympics: You heard it here!! The cows are headed to the olympics this saturday!! Not in Paris but in Rock Island, Illinois. This is our first outdoor meet of the year, and is a great way to get back into racing after spring break. The events offered are pretty limited so make sure to check the meet information document or ask Alex Marrione! They offer a 3x1 shuttle hurdle race which is a cool opportunity that this meet offers.
Signup deadline is Closed.
